About the show

In “LAKBAY” (Tagalog word for Journey), Josh meditates on patterns, cycles and rhythms. Drawing upon his mother tongue of Tagalog, pivotal personal experiences and journeys into the natural world of the west coast rainforest, he intimately attunes into buried roots; breathing life into the undercurrents of their queer and filipinx identity.

New Works is proud to partner with Rumble on the world premiere presentation of LAKBAY by Josh Ongcol & Miguel Maravilla. This piece was created earlier in March 2021 as part of Josh’s artist residency with Rumble and New Works. The development of LAKBAY is made possible through Made in BC/Dance West Network’s 2nd annual Creative Residency, Re-Centering Margins 2020-21 and was further developed through Josh’s artist residency with Rumble and New Works in March 2021.

About this event

UnDone is going grey. Fast. Not just physically but socially, psychologically and even technologically. Ghosted by friends and society at large, the aging, isolated musician fades toward invisibility in an East Vancouver that seems increasingly surreal. Can he survive his mission to get to “Mission”? It’s a long shot!

A rock performance piece mining metaphor and comedy in the grey zones of mental illness, Isolation Suite features live music by Cold Calculi (Theatre Conspiracy’s Tim Carlson and Rumble’s own Christie Watson).

Isolation Suite was slated for a Spring 2021 stage premiere but, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the live version has been postponed until next season. In the meantime, we are producing an audio series, supported by music videos and a multimedia website, to be launched on April 15, 2021.

To give you a taste of the show and its music, we’re excited to share this trippy stop-motion video for “We Teach Our Objects How To Speak Our Language” by Margaret Krawecka and Ulla Laidlaw. The video was supported by a grant from Canada Council/CBC’s Digital Originals program.

‘You are safe here.
But out there
I’m not always sure.’

Blending a dreamy sonic landscape, solitary physical environment, and an unexpected use of technology, Good Things to Do invites participants to place themselves within a dreamscape in which they possess extraordinary powers. This wondrously immersive experience is a meditation on goodness, generosity, and the struggle to stay tender in a world that asks us to be hard.

The project was originally a live performance/installation incorporating digital design.

Following a COVID-19 pivot, Good Things to Do the piece has adapted, or perhaps found its form by embracing its digital form, having reached audiences across Canada, and well beyond.

“Good Things To Do offers a welcome asylum of tenderness” — Colin Thomas (colinthomas.ca)

“This is an interactive show truly designed with isolation in mind.” — Georgia Straight

Good Things to Do was originally created by “The Good Things Collective”. It was developed with the support of Boca del Lupo, and first showcased at the rEvolver Festival, and the inaugural FOLDA (2018).

About this event

ephemera plural : paper items (such as posters, broadsides, and tickets) that were originally meant to be discarded after use but have since become collectibles.

The scholar Peggy Phelan once claimed that the ontology of live performance is its disappearance. It is here for a moment in time, and then it is gone. But, as Rebecca Schneider has argued, every performance also leaves remains: in the bodies of its creators; in the memories of its audiences; and in the paper trails and material detritus that attest to the different phases of its development. Ephemera is hoping to collect some of those remains as they pertain to the recent history of performance on these lands.

How to participate in Ephemera IV
On June 26 and 27, we welcome you to come by PL1422 (1422 William St, Vancouver) at any time between 12:00pm and 4:00pm to submit your materials to be archived. COVID-19 safety protocols will be observed. If you prefer, you may email digital items to ephemera@rumble.org. Please submit your digital items by June 28.

Choose up to any three items to contribute. These can be anything from any timeline! If that sounds too open ended, here’s a prompt for those who wish to use it: “How does art evolve?”

Please fill out an archiving card for each item you submit. An archiving card template and event invitation can be download here: Fillable Ephemera IV Invitation and Archive Form

About the Ephemera Project
Ephemera is an ongoing archiving project that celebrates all of the performing arts community on these lands. For Ephemera IV, we are once again reaching out to ask artists and arts organizations to contribute bits and pieces of creative materials, office work and production pieces — items that would otherwise be discarded — to a collective archive. The collection will be housed, along with Ephemera I, II and III, as part of SFU Special Collections and Rare Books. The objective of Ephemera is to gather the Vancouver Theatre community in a non-competitive way to catalogue and celebrate our shared memories and our history.

Ephemera is a series of events brought to you in collaboration with Theatre Replacement, Rumble Theatre, and SFU Special Collections. Partners for previous iterations of the event also include the GVPTA and Upintheair Theatre.

Rumble Theatre is pleased to have partnered with Carousel Theatre for Young People to make Rishi & D Douen, our first-ever radio play for kids. The show brings Caribbean folklore to the West Coast of Canada to share a story filled with adventure and discovery.

Rishi sees and hears things that others can’t, just like their Uncle, “Papaboisee Mamou”. Rishi heard that when Uncle was small, he was taken by a Douen: a forest spirit that lures children into the woods. It was all just village talk and folklore…until one day Rishi’s little brother disappears, called into the forest. Now it’s up to Rishi to journey deep into the forest to seek out the Douen and find their brother!

Rishi & d Douen was commissioned as part of AudioPLAY, Carousel Theatre for Young People’s 2020-2021 season of screen-free audio theatre designed to engage and excite.
