About the Show

Our production was the Canadian premiere of Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour’s intimate and experimental play, BLANK. As formally inventive as it is engaging, BLANK reverses the typical theatre experience: A script riddled with blanks leaves the audience in charge of how the story will unfold. The concept might be simple, but the result is nothing short of empowering as a random audience member sees their own future determined by the imagination of others.

Development continues for Rumble’s current commissioned adaptation: Medea by award-winning playwright, actor, and author Carmen Aguirre. For her reimagining of the story Carmen transports Euripides’ Greek tragedy to Vancouver’s Little Saigon in the 1980s, into the heart of the Vietnamese diaspora, where the effects of war, violence, displacement, and trauma have followed.

As part of the play’s development and production, we are actively collaborating with the Southeast Asian Cultural Heritage Society (SEACHS) and members of Vancouver’s Vietnamese community.

Carmen’s Medea is the third script to be commissioned from Rumble’s adaptation program, following in the acclaimed footsteps of Governor General’s Award-winning script Indian Arm by Hiro Kanagawa (2015) and The Society for the Destitute Presents Titus Bouffonius by Colleen Murphy (2017).

Medea is in development throughout this year, with an aim to premiere the production in our 2020-21 season.

About the Show

Jiv is “Canadian.” And “Indian.” And “West Indian.” “Trinidadian”, too. Or maybe he’s just colonized. In Take d Milk, Nah?, Jiv blends personal storytelling and ritual to walk an audience through the Hin-dos and Hin-don’ts at the intersections of these cultures. The show is a refreshingly candid and delightfully funny look at race, religion, and nationalism(s): what divides us—and what we’re willing to accept in the desire to belong. Oh, and there’s a cow.

Take d Milk, Nah? made its West Coast debut at The Cultch in October 2019 before heading to Ottawa and the National Arts Centre in January 2020. It was slated to move on to Toronto (Theatre Passe Muraille) and Montreal (MAI) this spring, but these runs have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
